When handling a minor burn it is important you follow specific steps.

How to care for burns. Hold burned skin under cool not cold running water or immerse in cool water until the pain subsides. Thoroughly wash hands using antibacterial soap. Remove rings or other tight items from the burned area.

This helps prevent drying and provides relief. Fluid filled blisters protect against infection. Pat it dry with a clean towel.

Usually a first degree or a mild second degree burn can be treated at home. Use compresses if running water isn t available. Cover the burn with a sterile gauze bandage not fluffy cotton.

Wrap it loosely to avoid putting pressure on burned skin. Clean the burn with an antibiotic and soothe itchiness with aloe vera or petroleum jelly. Run cool not cold water over the wounded area to reduce pain and swelling.

Use a mild soap and water to cleanse affected area. Once a burn is completely cooled apply a lotion such as one that contains aloe vera or a moisturizer. Gently wash the burn with warm soapy water.

For a mild burn put the skin in cold water for 5 to 10 minutes. Hold the burned area under cool not cold running water or apply a cool wet compress until the pain eases. Try to do this quickly and gently before the area swells.

To treat a minor burn that s red slightly swollen and may have slight blistering run it under cool water for 10 15 minutes or until the pain eases.
